My wife and I were looking for the best tricycle for young kids. We took reviews from our friends and family members with young kids about various tricycles. It was hard to figure out the best one. Also, the old trike we bought for Nancy was a disaster. So we purchased the following nine tricycles for toddlers six months ago and decided to help other parents with kids of such ages by writing this blog.

We share, in this post, our experience with the following tricycles and how our kids feel about them. Before we move forward, let’s quickly look at the comparison table. Maybe you figure out your best trike for young kids at this table.

Radio Flyer Classic Dual Deck Toddler Tricycle

Before moving on to the detailed review of this tricycle for toddlers, let me tell you my favorite moment this trike gave to our family. We love to see George standing on its rear platform when Nancy rides it, and they both laugh in joy. Both the kids ride this trike, we only adjust the seat to different levels for both of them, and the adjustment never takes more than a couple of seconds.

This trike gives a classic look due to its 12 inches big front tire. Besides, all the tires are made of rubber, ensuring their longevity for years and a smooth ride. The chrome fenders on the tires add to the classic look of this tricycle. Besides, the handlebar is also made of chrome. Don’t worry; your child will not have to hold the chrome as the handgrips are comfortable and ensure smooth ride control.

Our kids love to ride this trike in the backyard and ring the bell whenever they pass by the hallway’s door if we are inside. Also, George rides the bike speedily to enjoy the streamers flowing into the air. The recommended age for this trike is 2-5 years, which works great for my kids.

Furthermore, the frame is all steel, so durability is out of the question. The maximum weight-bearing capacity of this tricycle is 49 pounds, so make sure your guests’ older kids don’t ride it to make its durability questionable.

Pros

  • Both kids can ride at a time.
  • A perfect gift for two kids’ families.
  • Easy to assemble.

Cons

  • Big for two years old with a small physique.
  • The wheels wobble when not fitted tightly.

Schwinn Roadster Kids Tricycle, Classic Tricycle, Red

More stylish than the previous one, this best tricycle for 4-year-olds has a retro look with a steel frame. Both my kids can ride it too. However, the best part is that the center of gravity of this trike is low to make the ride easy. My kids love to ride it and ask me often to adjust the seat. I usually move it forward to the 1st lock for George and backward to the 4th lock for Nancy. There is also the 5th lock to move the seat backward when Nancy grows.

Compared to the previous trike, the rear deck of this trike is made of genuine wood with the brand’s logo on it. The fenders are chrome but more stylish in design. The handlebar is mustache style with a classic ring bell to add to its vintage look. Also, the flowing tassels make it look fantastic.

This beautiful trike is more of Nancy’s choice due to its style. Her best friend also loves to ride it whenever she comes in. It comes ready to assemble in a few minutes. And to parents’ concern about longevity, there is a five years manufacturer warranty for the steel frame. Besides, the air tires last long and are of ideal diameter, front wheel 12 inches and rear wheels 8 inches. This wheel size with a vintage steel frame and low gravity seat make climbing on and off effortless for the junior buddies.

Pros

  • Difficult to tip over.
  • Stable on any terrain.
  • Lightweight but heavy-duty material.

Cons

  • The seat stays wobbly if not fitted tightly.
  • The pedals slip from little toes.

XJD 3 in 1 Kids Tricycles

After two classic trikes, here comes the modern one. It is the best tricycle for 2-year-olds as they can use it in multiple ways. At the same time, my four years old take the challenge of riding it as a balance bike. You guessed it right; it is a 3-in-1 trike, a tricycle and three-wheel bike for the little ones, and a two-wheel balance bike for the older ones. It meets the different age requirements of the kids and their thrill requirements too.

For the parents, it is fun too. You can put it together in minutes after you take it out of the box. You only need to install the seat and the handlebar. Remember to follow the instructions; otherwise, the installation can get troublesome. Besides, both the handlebar and the seat have additional adjustments. As per the age and physique requirement of the baby, you can adjust the seat’s height by lifting it or dragging it down. Also, you can adjust the angle of the handle so that little hands can have a firm grip. The soft handles further ensure the strong grip of the little hands.

The carbon steel frame makes this tricycle for kids last longer. Plus, the wheels remain silent, making this trike ideal to ride indoors. The wheels are enclosed, so the baby’s feet do not clamp. To further ensure your child’s safety, you would love to know that this trike has passed the required tests and its material and design are safe for kids.

If you want your kid to learn balancing, coordination, steering, and confidence, it’s a must-have trainer for early ages. Also, make sure the grownups don’t ride it as the maximum weight-bearing capacity is 55 pounds. Otherwise, the durability will get questionable.

Pros

  • You can store the removable pedals in the trike.
  • Wheels spin smoothly.
  • Switching from one mode to another is easy.

Cons

  • Not a suitable push tricycle for little kids.
  • The seat is getting loose.

besrey 5 in 1 Toddler Bike

After a 3-in-1 trike, let’s move towards a 5-in-1 trike in our fleet. It is the best tricycle for 3 4 years old that can cope with enlarged body sizes of growing babies. Also, it can satisfy the learning requirements of your babies. Both my babies love to ride it in different ways.

When we had it, George had already mastered walking; still, he enjoyed walking with this tricycle without pedals. After a few days, he shifted to the tricycle with paddles mode and still loves it that way, sometimes as a walker or a trike. Nancy loves it as a balance bike, but she is more toward the XJD balance bike.

The handle rotates up to 120 degrees to prevent rollovers, and enclosed wheels further ensure the baby’s feet do not get hurt. Besides, the frame is made of sturdy carbon steel that keeps the trike stable for years confirming its durability. For the babies’ safety and complete protection, the steel frame structure is curved so there are no edges and no risk of injuries during the ride.

The frame is simple that offers simple installation and deformation. You can put it together in minutes when you refer to the manual, and your baby is ready to take the first ride. You can switch between the riding modes through a button. And the kiddo can disassemble the pedals quickly to satisfy different riding cravings.

A smooth saddle is necessary for a smooth ride. Therefore, the saddle has a PU surface. Besides, the handlebar is made of rubber, ensuring no slipping of hands and a firm grip all around the ride. To further ensure a smooth ride, the rear wheels’ bearing is kept smooth, keeping the resistance minimum during the indoor or outdoor ride.

For parents’ satisfaction, the manufacturer offers a lifetime warranty and 24 months return policy.

Pros

  • Outstanding quality for the price.
  • It stays firm after so much rough use.
  • Every part is smoothly finished.

Cons

  • The instructions are not detailed.
  • It is a small structure for tall kids.F

Fisher-Price Hot Wheels Tough Trike

After many customizable trikes, let’s move towards the most simple, easy on the pocket, and non-customizable trike. It does not have so many options; that’s why it is most on George’s side, and Nancy does not love to ride it as she has other options. However, it is perfect for parents with a low budget. Let’s see how.

This best tricycle for young kids has a colorful structure and graphics of the Hot Wheels theme. Its appearance appeals to the child at first glance, and the baby wants to ride it. The frame is sturdy with a stable and wide wheelbase. These giant wheels with rigged treads keep the trike firm even on rough surfaces.

The foot pedals are large for easy and smooth rides, so the child can comfortably put their feet on them and push quickly. For further comfort, handlebars are easy to hold, and the child does not lose grip. Kids learn balancing and coordination skills while they ride this trike without the burden of learning. Also, their leg muscles strengthen as they push the paddles.

George often wants to take gardening tools together while riding the trike toward the lawn. This craving of George is not satisfied with any of the trikes above. But this trike has a secret storage compartment where George puts all the toy tools. So we can say this is his choice of George when he has to take along stuff.

For its longevity, ensure the kids don’t ride it when they reach a weight of more than 55 pounds.

Pros

  • Lightweight, easy to move for babies.
  • Colors appeal child.
  • The storage compartment is fantastic.

Cons

  • Assembling is easy, but it takes time.
  • The wheels wobble if not assembled tightly.

Radio Flyer Deluxe Steer & Stroll Ride on Trike

Sometimes you walk with your toddler on a trike, and suddenly the kid feels tired and doesn’t want to paddle anymore. George does that when we are more than 500 meters away from home. On those walks, I prefer taking this stroll trike along. Also, it is the best option if you don’t know when a 2-year-old can ride a trike and have to buy one.

In the stroll mode, the pedals lock and become the footrest. The parent steers the trike with the parent’s push handle. When George gets tired on the way, I drag the trike while George sits on it, and we both reach home quickly. The second mode is the trike mode, and this stroll trike works as a standard tricycle. Also, if you are sure you do not need the parent push handle, you can remove it, and the trike will become lightweight.

This best toddler tricycle with a push handle also copes with the growing body needs of babies, and the seat adjusts to three different settings. You can move it forward or backward as per the requirement. It is a go-to trike for Nancy when she takes stuff along the ride, as it also includes a storage compartment. The plus point of the storage compartment is that it is covered, so you can also put foodstuff in it. Also, Nancy loves to ring the bell when she reaches the front door. It is a complete fun trike.

Besides the fun side, it is durable and stable due to the solid steel frame. The wheels are of durable molded plastic that remains stable on any terrain. Ensure that the kid’s weight and the stuff it takes along do not get heavier than 49 pounds; otherwise, it will compromise the long life of the trike.

Pros

  • You don’t have to bend while pushing the trike.
  • Assembling does not take long.
  • It improves coordination in babies.

Cons

  • Instructions are not clear.
  • Pedals are getting loose with time.

67i 3 in 1 Tricycle for 1-3 Year Old Toddler

Remember the XJD trike on the 3rd position above? This one has similar features but is for small kids, so our George uses it the most while Nancy is riding the XJD trike. This way, both have similar trikes to ride, and there is no point in fighting.

This three-in-one tricycle for young kids is a perfect tricycle with three wheels and smooth pedals. The second mode is a three-wheel push bike. Furthermore, the third mode is the two-wheel balance bike. Switching between the three-wheel and two-wheel modes is easy; you can do it in a few seconds without any hassle and any tools.

As we said earlier that this is for small kids, so keep your kids above 25 pounds weight away from riding this trike. If they want it, give them the XJD trike. Lower than 25 pounds weight is not an issue, and it will grow with your kid. You can adjust its handle and seat. The seat moves up and down, and the handle’s angle has five adjustments according to the riding posture and age.

The frame is made of sturdy carbon steel for the child’s safety, and the kid sits on a soft, supportive seat. The steering does not rotate more than 60 degrees to avoid slips and falls. The wide, fully enclosed EVA foam wheels are quiet and do not slip on surfaces. Also, they are wear-resistant and last for years to come. The triangular structure keeps the center of gravity in point, so there is no tipping over.

Pros

  • Easy to assemble.
  • It looks small but enough for a three-year-old.
  • Lightweight for babies to handle easily.

Cons

  • Instructions are not written properly.
  • Difficult to paddle for small kids.

Radio Flyer Deluxe Big Flyer

If any trike’s shape in our fleet attracts our kids, it is the Radio Flyer’s chopper-style tricycle. George loves to ride it, but it is challenging to handle. Nancy’s favorite one is this if she has to go with me down the road. This trike has a giant wheel of 16 inches on the front; that’s a lot to its shape. However, turning this wheel is not difficult due to the easy grip handle that also protects the wheel from spinning out.

The seat of this best tricycle for 3-year-olds is adjustable and can cope with the growing baby’s height for up to seven years. The trike’s whole body is molded plastic, but the handlebars are of chrome, which adds class to this style. However, the handgrips are comfortable, so the little hands do not get tired.

The center of gravity of this trike is kept lower as the seat is only four inches above the floor. That’s why the child’s safety is not an issue with this stylish trike. Besides, if any grownup wants to ride it, that will not be an issue unless they weigh more than 65 pounds.

Paddling this trike is not an issue. The wheels are of high quality and withstand wear and tear for a long time. Also, there is an additional rubber strip around the big wheel for a smoother riding experience. The paddles are wide enough to hold the feet of an older kid and rotate with minimum force applied. The whole structure is sturdy enough to offer a smooth ride no matter your travel on rough surfaces.

Pros

  • It is a smaller version of a Big Wheel.
  • Easy to assemble.
  • Comfortable to ride.

Cons

  • The front wheel slips sometimes.
  • Hard to reach paddles for small kids.

smarTrike Zoom Toddler Tricycle Push Bike

Here is the upgraded version of the Radio Flyer’s stroll trike, the smarTrike tricycle. It has a 4-in-1 design that suits both my kids very well. When we bought it, we used its first mode, the push tricycle for George. After a few days, he enjoyed the ride, so we switched to mode 2, removing the sun shade and the high back support. And now, he wants to paddle, so we folded the footrest. Only the parent handle is there to control the turning of the wheel. We remove it when it is Nancy’s turn to ride this trike.

Parents don’t always want to bend their back to control the steering of their little one’s trike. Coping this need, smarTrike has designed the effortless touch steering technology. This way, you can manage your little one’s trike direction single-handedly. Also, a parent control button allows you to switch between parent and child modes with just a click. After you press the button, twist the wheel 180 degrees, and the modes will change.

The trike’s front wheel absorbs any shock due to uneven surfaces and ensures a smooth and secure ride for the baby. Also, there is a three-point harness so that the baby sits securely on the seat, making it the best tricycle for a 1-year-old. There is a toy basket behind the trike seat so that your little one can carry the favorite toy securely.

For further comfort of the parents, the trike comes with a two years warranty and support from a customer service team for your assistance.

Pros

  • Easy to use.
  • It steers smoothly.
  • Easy to assemble.

Cons

  • The handlebar does not go with the wheel sometimes.
  • The child lock gets stuck sometimes.

Best Tricycle for Young Kids Buying Guide

Choosing the best tricycle for your kids is never easy. Babies always want something exciting that thrills them to play with it. Also, if you have more than one kid and want to buy a single item, you must keep your kids’ age requirements in mind. Besides, ensure the item you buy remains useful for kids for years, not days. Therefore, we have compiled this buying guide to determine what to look for while choosing a tricycle for young kids.

Size

The size of the tricycle you choose is critical. However all the trikes are small, but they should be according to your child’s age and physique. The manufacturers mostly specify the trikes’ sizes according to the child’s age. But your child can be tall as per the presumed height at a specific age or short. So keep in mind your kid’s size before you buy a trike so that the toes reach the paddle and ground; otherwise, the child and you will have to wait until the child grows.

Reading other parents’ reviews is useful when you buy the trike online. That through research will disclose if the trike you want to buy is suitable as per the body height of your child or not.

Purpose

Don’t just go with the style; see if the trike you buy will serve the purpose or not. For example, if you want a 2-in-1 or 3 in 1 trike, the chosen trike should have all its functions. There are many options for multipurpose trikes. They can be stroll trikes, or balance bikes turn tricycles. The choice is yours as per your requirement as your baby’s age. However, it is best to invest in a trike that serves most of the purposes so that you don’t have to buy another one as the child grows.

Ease of Maneuverability

As many trikes nowadays are multipurpose, it should not be hard to switch between different modes. It will take time and will be hard to remove parts for switching between the modes. In contrast, if the parts are foldable and there are buttons to switch between the modes, it will save time and effort. Therefore, go for trikes that are easy to maneuver between different modes.

Age Adjustable

Trikes are for kids that grow faster. Therefore go for trikes that you can adjust according to the growing body of your kid. Most trikes have adjustable handles and seats that grow as your child grows. It will be a wise investment than a trike with no flexible options.

Fun Factor

Most trikes are multipurpose but boring. They don’t have any ring bells or sharp colors to attract kids. That’s why kids get bored of them within days, and parents get worried about wasting their investment. Therefore, go for trikes with attractive colors and graphics. Having a ring bell on the handle will keep the child’s attention. Also, some trikes have streamers that kids love to watch flowing in the air.

Durability

Buying something durable makes it last longer and saves you money in the long run. When buying online, look for reviews; if the other parents are satisfied with the durability of the trike, then go for it; otherwise, think of other suitable options.

Safety

The child’s safety is essential to consider while buying a trike. Read the product description in detail to know what the manufacturer has done to make the trike safe for the kid. The front wheel should not be rotatable beyond the safety point. Also, the wheels should not slip. Ensure the trike offers a smooth ride on all surfaces, and the child does not fall.

Enclosed wheels are also a plus for the trikes, so they don’t hurt little feet.

Assembly

Most of the trikes you buy online require assembling. If you are not a mechanic, it can be hard to assemble the trike. Therefore, ensure that the manufacturer sends easy-to-read and step-by-step instructions and that the assembly does not take much time. To ensure your chosen trike is easy to assemble, you must read online reviews of the parents who have already assembled it.

Ease of Riding

The trike of the little one must be easy to ride. The handle should be smooth to move, not too hard that the little one feels it hectic to turn it. Also, the paddles should be easy to push with a little force. However, there should be a balance; too soft handle and pedals can also be risky, and the child can fall.

Weight

The durability of the trike comes with high-quality material that can increase the trike’s weight. The heavyweight trike can be difficult for your little one to handle. Ensure that the trike’s weight is not much and is still durable.

Extra Features

Following are some features that are best to have; otherwise, there is no issue of not having them.

Storage Bin

A storage bin is an extra feature, but it is a plus point too. Kids love to carry their favorite toys and other essential gear with them while they ride. With the storage bin, it gets easy to take all of it. Otherwise, the parents must carry everything for the kid while riding.

Sun Shade

When the children ride the trike outside, they are exposed to harmful sun rays. Therefore it is good to have a sun shade over the trike’s seat so that sun rays don’t reach the baby directly.

Footrest

Most of the trikes in the market and the list above are multipurpose. The kid does not paddle such trikes all the time. So it is a plus to have a footrest so that their feet do not drag on the ground or get caught up in wheels.

Budget

You will find the best tricycle for young kids in every price range. No doubt the pricy trikes have more features, but you can always find a trike in your budget. It is something that your kid rides for a couple of years or more, so there is no point in investing in a pricy trike beyond your budget. For your ease, we have enlisted trikes of every budget above.

Conclusion

At this point, you know everything about tricycles for young kids, from different options to what to look for in an ideal trike. Let’s move towards some recommendations according to my kids’ liking, budget, durability, safety, and my observation.

The show stopper of this guide is the besrey 5 in 1 Toddler Bike. I declare it as our family’s top pick due to enough features at a reasonable price, and both my kids love it the most. In contrast, if you are looking for the best budget option, go for the Fisher-Price Hot Wheels Tough Trike.

Schwinn Roadster Tricycle for Toddlers and Kids is the most durable trike on the list that will not go anywhere for years no matter how much your kid mishandles it. On the other hand, Radio Flyer Deluxe Big Flyer is the most stylish option on the list if your kid wants to stand noticeable among other kids.
